Chofukujuji Temple

A Temple for Prayers for Good Fortune and Longevity

Chofukujuji Temple is a historic Tendai Buddhist temple located in Chonan, Chonan Town, Chosei District, Chiba Prefecture. It is also the 19th temple on the Kazusa Yakushi Nyorai Pilgrimage, a pilgrimage route dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of healing and medicine.

The temple has the distinguished mountain and temple title “Sangakawa Head, Eastern Gate of Paradise, Lotus Platform, Amida Hall, Taiheiya Mountain, Honjōjō-in”. Its unusually long formal name reflects the temple’s historical status and connections with important Tendai Buddhist institutions.

Overview of Chofukujuji Temple

According to temple tradition, Chofukujuji was founded in 798 at the imperial request of Emperor Kanmu by Saichō, also known as Dengyō Daishi, the founder of Japanese Tendai Buddhism.

From the Heian period through the Kamakura period, the temple played an important role in the development of Tendai Buddhism in the Kanto region. It is said to have served as a major Tendai temple for the three historical provinces of Boso and once controlled 308 branch temples.

Because of its extensive temple lands and high religious status, Chofukujuji was known as the “Hieizan of the East,” referring to Enryakuji on Mount Hiei, the historic center of Tendai Buddhism. The temple contributed to the spread and development of Buddhist culture throughout eastern Japan.

The Origin of the Temple’s Formal Name

Chofukujuji was granted the distinguished title “Sangakawa Head, Eastern Gate of Paradise, Lotus Platform, Amida Hall, Taiheiya Mountain, Honjōjō-in.”

This prestigious title is associated with the temple’s historical relationship with the heads of Kajii Monzeki (Sanzen-in) and Bishamondō in Kyoto, who served as abbots of Chofukujuji. The connection reflects the high status that the temple once held within the Tendai Buddhist tradition.

The History of Chofukujuji Temple

Connections with the Reconstruction of Mount Hiei

Chofukujuji also played a role in the rebuilding of Enryakuji Temple on Mount Hiei after the destruction of the temple complex during Oda Nobunaga’s attack in 1571.

At the time, the temple’s 17th head of learning, Gozan Sojo, is said to have donated timber for the reconstruction of Mount Hiei. The donated wood was used in rebuilding the Konpon Chudo, the central hall of Enryakuji.

Later, with support from Tokugawa Iemitsu, the reconstruction of the Konpon Chudo was completed. Chofukujuji subsequently received some of the timber and used it to rebuild its own main hall. Because of this connection with the Konpon Chudo, the temple was granted permission to use the title “Konpon Chudo” for its own main hall.

Prestige During the Edo Period

During the Edo period, Chofukujuji received an estate of 50 koku from the shogunate and was treated as a temple with a status equivalent to that of a domain of 100,000 koku.

The temple’s high rank was also reflected in its treatment during the shogun’s New Year ceremonies. When paying its annual New Year’s respects to the shogun, the temple’s representative was granted a special dokurei seating position in the shogunate’s castle halls, a privilege that reflected its distinguished status.

Cultural Properties of Chofukujuji

Chofukujuji preserves several important Buddhist statues and historical documents designated as cultural properties by Chiba Prefecture and Chonan Town. These artifacts provide valuable insight into the temple’s long history and religious traditions.
