Yawataya Isogoro is a long-established producer specializing in shichimi togarashi, the famous Japanese seven-spice blend, based in Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture. Its history dates back to 1736, during the Edo period, when the founder, Kan’emon, began selling chili peppers on the grounds of Zenkoji Temple.
With a history spanning more than 280 years, Yawataya Isogoro is regarded as one of Japan’s three major traditional shichimi makers, alongside Yagenbori in Asakusa, Tokyo, and Shichimiya near Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto.
The founder, Kan’emon, came from what is now the Kinasa area of Nagano City. He began selling chili peppers within the grounds of Zenkoji Temple, starting what would become Yawataya Isogoro.
His small stall gradually became known for its distinctive aroma and flavor. By the time of the third-generation owner, Gizaemon, the shop had earned the privilege of opening a stall at Gokosatsu-mae, one of the most prestigious locations within the temple grounds.
Shichimi togarashi was particularly popular with pilgrims because it was lightweight, easy to carry, and could be stored for a long time. It was even said to serve as a kind of souvenir and memento of a Zenkoji pilgrimage, treasured by visitors in much the same way as a temple stamp or other religious keepsake.
During the time of the seventh-generation owner, Eisuke, Yawataya Isogoro established an impressive shop in Daimoncho, along the main approach to Zenkoji Temple. At the time, this area was also a central part of Nagano City, helping the company gain even greater recognition and trust.
Today, Yawataya Isogoro products are available not only at souvenir shops and supermarkets throughout Nagano Prefecture, but also at department stores and other retailers across more than 20 prefectures in Japan.
While carefully preserving its traditional flavors and craftsmanship, the company has also continued to develop new products and ways of enjoying Japanese spices.
In 2014, Yawataya Isogoro opened Yokocho Café, offering sweets and other creations that incorporate ingredients traditionally associated with its spice blends, including shiso leaves, sesame, and yuzu citrus.
The café presents traditional Japanese spices in an unexpected modern form and has become a popular place for both local residents and visitors to experience a different side of Yawataya Isogoro.
One characteristic of Yawataya Isogoro’s shichimi is the inclusion of ginger, an ingredient particularly suited to the cold climate of Nagano. The result is a blend with a pronounced aroma and warming spiciness that gives it a distinctive character compared with shichimi produced in other regions.
The company’s packaging combines traditional Japanese aesthetics with a playful sense of design. Some packages feature stamped designs transferred from woodblock prints dating from the late Edo period.
The distinctive tin cans are especially well known. The design was created by sixth-generation owner Eisuke in the early Showa period and has remained popular for generations.
The famous red shichimi tin features an eye-catching diagonal chili pepper motif together with an image of Zenkoji Temple. Other designs include the yellow Yuzu Shichimi tin, annual Year Model Tins with changing themes, and Anniversary Tins created for commemorative occasions.
Shichimi Togarashi is the company’s signature seven-spice blend and the classic product associated with Yawataya Isogoro.
Yuzu Shichimi combines the spicy blend with fragrant yuzu citrus peel, creating a refreshing aroma.
Fukairi Shichimi is a richly flavored blend incorporating white sesame, green laver, and yuzu.
Custom Blend allows customers to create their own blend at the shop using nine varieties of chili peppers and approximately 30 different ingredients.
Roasted Ichimi is a classic single-chili pepper spice with a roasted character.
BIRD EYE is a particularly hot roasted chili pepper blend for those who enjoy intense spiciness.
Other variations include Shichimi Garam Masala, Ramen Shichimi, and Sansho Shichimi, each developed to complement different types of cuisine.
Shichimi Sesame, Ume Shichimi Sesame, and Curry Shichimi Sesame are popular for sprinkling over rice balls, side dishes, and everyday meals.
Gold Leaf Shichimi offers a luxurious presentation and makes an attractive gift. Shichimi Dozen contains 12 small packets, making it convenient for trying different flavors or sharing with others.
KONGEN SPICE is a newer spice series that represents the company’s continuing approach to developing products for modern tastes.
Yawataya Isogoro has been part of the Zenkoji temple town for more than 280 years. Its history is closely connected with pilgrims, the streets of Nagano, and the culinary culture of the region.
The company’s shichimi reflects both tradition and local character, while its wide range of products shows how a centuries-old spice maker can continue to adapt to contemporary tastes. From the classic red tin to yuzu blends, specialty spices, and modern café creations, there are many ways to discover the world of Yawataya Isogoro.
When visiting Nagano, consider stopping by Yawataya Isogoro together with a visit to Zenkoji Temple. Sampling or taking home a fragrant shichimi blend is a delicious way to bring a small piece of Nagano’s food culture home with you.
