Yagiyama BennyLand is a popular amusement park located in Yagiyama, Taihaku Ward, Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Since opening in 1968, the park has welcomed generations of families, friends, and couples and has become one of the best-known amusement parks in the Tohoku region of northeastern Japan.
One of its greatest attractions is its location. Sendai City Yagiyama Zoological Park is directly across from the amusement park, allowing visitors to enjoy both a zoo and an amusement park in a single day. With a combination of classic rides, family attractions, seasonal scenery, and a long local history, Yagiyama BennyLand offers a distinctly Japanese amusement park experience.
The name “Beny Land” comes from Benikyu, a real estate company that manages the Yagiyama area and is the parent company of the park’s operating company, Eightree.
The park’s distinctive “Benny Mark” is also designed with a playful concept. The Japanese character “ベ” is enclosed in a circle, with its dakuten marks representing eyes and another element representing a mouth. Together, the design expresses the smiling face of a child.
Two mascot characters based on the symbol, a boy named Benigno and a girl named Benigna, also welcome visitors to the park.
Yagiyama BennyLand generally operates from early March through Coming-of-Age Day in January. During certain periods, including late November to mid-December and early January, the park may open only on weekends and public holidays. It is generally closed from late December, as well as from mid-January until early March.
Because the park follows a seasonal operating schedule, visitors from overseas should check the latest opening calendar before traveling.
The scenery and atmosphere also change throughout the year. Cherry blossoms appear in spring, refreshing outdoor rides are enjoyable in summer, autumn foliage colors the grounds in fall, and seasonal illumination can add a special atmosphere during winter.
Although the present Yagiyama BennyLand opened on April 14, 1968, its history goes back even further to the opening of Yagiyama Amusement Park in 1930.
The original park was the first comprehensive amusement park in the Tohoku region. It featured 15 types of attractions, including a roller coaster, go-karts, teacups, rotating swings, and a space rocket ride.
Some of these classic attractions, including the roller coaster, go-karts, and teacups, have continued to evolve and remain part of the park’s identity. Their longevity is a reminder of the park’s more than half-century history.
The park entered a period of significant development during the 1980s. Visitor numbers reached approximately 500,000 in 1980, and in 1988 the large Yagiyama Cyclone roller coaster was introduced.
Other innovative attractions also appeared, including a corkscrew-style coaster capable of performing two inversions. These rides helped establish the park as a destination for visitors seeking more exciting amusement park experiences.
From the 2000s onward, Yagiyama BennyLand expanded its appeal through special events as well as amusement rides. Events such as the Sendai Cosplay Festival and Halloween Festa were held from 2007, attracting participants not only from Tohoku but also from the Kanto region.
These events introduced the park to younger visitors and helped broaden its audience beyond traditional family groups.
Yagiyama BennyLand was affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. Some rides suffered serious damage, including cases where foundations were damaged along with the surrounding ground.
Despite the difficulties, the park reopened approximately one month later, on April 15. Its reopening provided entertainment and a sense of normality for people in the local community during the recovery period.
Yagiyama BennyLand is also known for its cheerful theme song, created to commemorate the opening of the park. The lyrics were written by Fuyuhiko Masaki, the music was composed by Nobuyoshi Koshibe, and the song was performed by Fusako Amachi.
The catchy melody became widely familiar in the Tohoku region. It has also been used as a cheering song at local high school baseball games and as a chance theme for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles professional baseball team.
The song became so recognizable that people outside Miyagi have sometimes mistaken it for the theme used in commercials for Garigari-kun, a popular Japanese frozen dessert.
Yagiyama Cyclone is the park’s major large-scale roller coaster, introduced in 1988. It has a total track length of approximately 600 meters, reaches a maximum height of about 25 meters, and has a maximum gradient of 55 degrees.
The coaster reaches speeds of up to approximately 70 km/h and produces forces of up to 3.7 G. Its combination of speed, steep drops, and powerful turns makes it one of the park’s signature thrill attractions.
The current Ferris wheel is the park’s second-generation Ferris wheel, installed in 1992. From the top, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Sendai and, on clear days, toward the Pacific Ocean.
For two years beginning in 2017, the Ferris wheel operated under naming rights as “Ferris Wheel — Presented by Sendai Aoba Gakusha.”
Yagiyama BennyLand also has plenty of attractions suitable for younger children and families. These include a merry-go-round, teacups, a mini roller coaster, and go-karts.
Seasonal events and shows are also held at various times, creating opportunities for children to enjoy more than just the rides.
The park is located approximately 15 minutes by car from central Sendai. It is also only a few minutes’ walk from Yagiyama Zoological Park Station on the Sendai Subway Tozai Line.
This convenient transportation makes the park particularly easy to include in a sightseeing itinerary around Sendai, even for international visitors traveling without a rental car.
One of the best features of the location is the neighboring Yagiyama Zoological Park. Visitors can start the day by exploring animals from around the world and then cross over to Beny Land for amusement rides.
This combination makes the Yagiyama area an especially convenient destination for families who want to enjoy a full day of entertainment.
For generations, Yagiyama BennyLand has been closely connected with the people of Sendai. In addition to ordinary sightseeing, the park has hosted local events and school-related activities and has served as a place where local culture and community life come together.
Yagiyama BennyLand is a historic amusement park where classic attractions, thrilling rides, seasonal scenery, and local culture come together. Its long history gives the park a character that is different from large modern theme parks.
Families can enjoy gentle attractions such as the merry-go-round and teacups, while thrill-seekers can experience the Yagiyama Cyclone. The Ferris wheel provides a more relaxing way to take in the Sendai skyline, while seasonal events offer additional entertainment throughout the operating period.
For travelers visiting Sendai, combining Yagiyama BennyLand with the neighboring zoo provides an easy and enjoyable full-day outing. It is a destination where visitors can experience both the fun of an amusement park and a piece of Sendai’s entertainment history.
