Sumoto Artisan Square

A Cultural and Artistic Hub in Sumoto

Sumoto Artisan Square is a cultural and commercial complex in Sumoto City on Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture. Located within the Sumoto Civic Plaza in the city’s new urban center, the facility supports local industry while providing a welcoming space for arts, culture, shopping, and dining. Its distinctive combination of historic architecture and contemporary creative activities makes it an appealing place to explore while visiting the island.

Historical Background and Architecture

The centerpiece of Sumoto Artisan Square is a red-brick boiler house from the former second factory of Kanegafuchi Spinning Company, commonly known as Kanebo. Built during the Meiji period, the building is recognized by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry as a Modern Industrial Heritage site and remains an important historical landmark in Sumoto.

The former Kanebo Sumoto factory was one of the spinning mills that symbolized Japan’s modernization in the early 20th century. The boiler house was completed in 1909, with its design handled by Yokogawa Engineering Works and construction carried out by Takenaka Corporation. Its exterior features traditional English-bond brickwork, while the roof incorporates a raised clerestory-style structure. A large chimney adds to the building’s distinctive industrial appearance.

Renovation and Revitalization

From the late 20th century into the early 21st century, extensive renovation work was undertaken to preserve and revitalize the former Kanebo factory’s red-brick buildings. The historic exterior was retained, while four newly constructed neighboring buildings were designed to create visual continuity and a unified architectural setting. The renovation also strengthened the functional connections between the buildings, giving the historic complex a new role as a center for cultural and commercial activity.
