Sumaura Mountain Amusement Park is a scenic leisure park in Suma Ward, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. Spread across the summit areas of Mount Hachibuse and Mount Hatafuri, the park combines lush natural surroundings, botanical gardens, panoramic viewpoints, and nostalgic amusement rides. Its blend of mountain scenery, seasonal flowers, and old-fashioned attractions makes it a popular destination for local residents and visitors looking to enjoy a different side of Kobe.
The park was originally operated by Sumaura Yuen Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Sanyo Electric Railway. On December 1, 2019, management was transferred directly to Sanyo Electric Railway.
One of the park’s best-known landmarks is the Rotating Observation Tower, which offers a 360-degree panorama of the surrounding landscape. From here, visitors can look out over Suma Beach, the Kitan Strait, and the Rokko mountain range. On clear days, the broad views of the coastline and mountains make this an excellent place to appreciate the natural beauty of the Kobe area.
To reach the summit area, visitors can take the Sumaura Ropeway from Sumaura-koen Station on the Sanyo Electric Railway, followed by the unusual Carreter, a vehicle designed to travel up a steep incline of approximately 25 degrees. Once at the top, visitors can explore woodland walking paths and enjoy the peaceful mountain environment.
To the west of the Rotating Observation Tower are several botanical areas known for their seasonal flowers. These include a plum grove, a Japanese rose garden featuring rugosa roses, and a wisteria garden. Each area offers a different landscape throughout the year, making the park an appealing destination for flower lovers and photographers.
The area once occupied by the former Doremifa Fountain Palace entertainment hall is now home to Hana no Hiroba, or Flower Plaza. From the terrace beside the fountain pool, visitors can enjoy views of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, which spans the strait between Kobe and Awaji Island.
The summit area also features a charming, retro-style amusement park that dates back to the park’s opening in 1959. Traditional attractions such as the cycle monorail and sightseeing lift preserve the atmosphere of an earlier era, offering a refreshing alternative to modern theme parks.
The sightseeing lift connects Settsu Station and Harima Station along a route approximately 268 meters long. During the ride, passengers cross the historic boundary between Settsu Province and Harima Province, two former regions of Japan. The combination of gentle rides, mountain scenery, and nostalgic design makes this area particularly appealing to families and visitors who enjoy retro attractions.
The Rokko Traverse Route, a long-distance hiking trail crossing the Rokko mountain range, passes through the park. Walking trails and paths around the grounds make it possible to enjoy the surrounding forests and mountain scenery, with routes suitable for a range of hiking abilities.
Mount Hatafuri is especially well known for its views. On a clear day, hikers can see as far as the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. The park is therefore a worthwhile stop not only for families and sightseeing visitors but also for people who enjoy walking in nature.
The park once featured an entertainment venue called Doremifa Fountain Palace, which combined fountains with lighting effects and synchronized sound to create a distinctive show. The performances offered visitors a memorable form of entertainment in the mountain setting.
However, as the facility aged and visitor numbers declined, the venue closed in November 1987. The building has since been demolished, and the area is now associated with Flower Plaza.
The most convenient way to reach the park is to travel to Sumaura-koen Station on the Sanyo Electric Railway. From the station, take the Sumaura Ropeway and then the Carreter to reach the summit area.
Several other attractions are located nearby, including Suma Rikyu Park, Sumadera Temple, and Suma Beach. Visitors interested in exploring more of Kobe’s coastal scenery and history can combine a visit to Sumaura Mountain Amusement Park with these surrounding destinations.
With its beautiful seasonal flowers, sweeping views of the sea and mountains, hiking trails, and nostalgic rides, Sumaura Mountain Amusement Park offers a distinctive blend of nature and retro entertainment. It is an enjoyable place to spend time with family or friends while discovering the scenic side of Kobe.
