Sakata City Museum of Art

A Museum Where Art and Nature Meet, with Views of Mount Chokai and the Shonai Plain

Sakata City Museum of Art is located on a gently elevated hill in Sakata, Yamagata Prefecture. Surrounded by abundant greenery, the museum offers beautiful views of Mount Chokai, the Mogami River, and Sakata city from its grounds and interior spaces.

The museum occupies an extensive site of approximately 30,000 square meters, with a facility covering around 3,000 square meters. The spacious design creates an open and relaxing atmosphere. The building was carefully designed to blend with its natural surroundings, allowing visitors to enjoy not only the artworks but also the architecture and scenery around them.

The museum’s collection includes works by important Japanese Western-style painters and sculptors, with a particular focus on artists connected to Sakata and the Shonai region. A variety of special exhibitions are also held throughout the year, offering visitors opportunities to encounter different artists and artistic themes depending on when they visit.

Permanent Exhibitions Focused on Japanese Western-Style Art

Sakata City Museum of Art houses and displays works by artists associated with Sakata and Shonai, as well as leading figures in Japanese Western-style painting and sculpture.

The permanent collection features works by several notable artists, including Choso Saito, a Western-style painter born in the local area; sculptor Go Takahashi; Western-style painter Shigeru Morita, who repeatedly depicted the traditional Kurokawa Noh performances of Yamagata; and Tsuneo Kokuryo, a painter who visited coastlines along both the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean and created works inspired by sand dunes.

Art That Reflects the Culture and Landscape of Shonai

Shigeru Morita is particularly known for his long-standing interest in Kurokawa Noh, a traditional performing art that has been preserved in the Shonai region of Yamagata. His paintings provide an artistic perspective on one of the area’s distinctive cultural traditions.

Tsuneo Kokuryo created numerous works inspired by beaches and sand dunes throughout Japan. His subjects also evoke the coastal landscapes of the Sea of Japan surrounding Sakata.

Through works ranging from local artists to nationally recognized Japanese creators, visitors can discover the landscape, culture, and traditions of Shonai from a variety of artistic perspectives.

Special Exhibitions Held Throughout the Year

In addition to its permanent collection, Sakata City Museum of Art presents special exhibitions throughout the year. These exhibitions cover a wide range of artistic genres and may introduce works and themes from Japan and other countries.

Combining the permanent collection with a special exhibition allows visitors to experience both art connected to the local region and a broader selection of artistic works. The exhibitions also provide a reason to return, as the experience can change depending on the season and exhibition schedule.

Architecture Designed to Blend with the Surrounding Landscape

The museum was designed by Yoshiro Ikehara, a member of the Japan Art Academy and professor emeritus of Waseda University. His architectural approach places particular emphasis on harmony with the surrounding natural environment and views.

The building incorporates the outside scenery into its interior spaces through carefully positioned windows and open areas. As a result, the Shonai Plain and Mount Chokai visible beyond the windows can feel almost like part of the museum’s exhibitions.

An Award-Winning Museum Building

The museum has been recognized for its architecture and its harmonious relationship with the surrounding environment. In 1998, it received the 39th BCS Award, a major Japanese architectural award. It also received the Public Building Award in November 2002.

For visitors interested in architecture, the museum offers an additional attraction: its design demonstrates how a cultural facility can make use of the surrounding landscape while providing a setting for viewing art.

“Shosei,” a Sculpture in the Courtyard

In the museum’s courtyard stands “Shosei”, a sculpture by renowned sculptor Kan Yasuda. Created from white marble, the work serves almost like a symbol connecting the museum building with the expansive Shonai Plain beyond it.

The white marble catches the changing natural light and contrasts beautifully with the surrounding greenery and sky. Because it is displayed outdoors, visitors can experience the work in changing weather and natural light, offering a different perspective from the artworks inside the galleries.

“Shosei” Framed by the Landscape of Shonai

One of the most striking views can be enjoyed from the glass-walled entrance, where visitors can look toward “Shosei.” Beyond the sculpture are views of the Dewa Sanzan mountains, Mount Chokai, and the expansive sky, creating a powerful image of the Shonai landscape.

In Ikehara’s architectural design, “Shosei” was not simply placed in the courtyard as an isolated sculpture. Instead, the composition was designed so that the sculpture helps draw the surrounding Shonai Plain into the museum’s visual space.

Enjoy Art Together with the Landscapes of Shonai

Sakata City Museum of Art is more than a place to view paintings and sculptures. It is a cultural destination where visitors can experience art together with the spectacular natural scenery of Mount Chokai, the Shonai Plain, and the Mogami River.

Visitors can discover Shonai’s cultural heritage through works by artists connected with the region, explore a variety of special exhibitions, appreciate the museum’s architecture, or simply enjoy the outdoor sculpture and surrounding scenery.

When visiting, be sure to look beyond the gallery displays and take time to appreciate “Shosei” in the courtyard and the views of Mount Chokai and the Shonai Plain through the museum’s windows. These elements reveal what makes Sakata City Museum of Art distinctive: a place where art, architecture, nature, and the cultural landscape of northern Japan come together.
