Roadside Station Sagae “Cherry Land” is a large-scale tourism complex in Sagae City, Yamagata Prefecture, centered around the region’s famous cherries. The extensive grounds bring together a wide variety of facilities, including a tourism and local-products center, a museum dedicated to the history of cherry cultivation, a traditional Japanese tea room, a Turkish cultural pavilion, and a fruit park.

One of the major attractions is the enormous selection of local products, including more than 600 cherry-related products. Visitors can also find Yamagata specialties, traditional sweets, locally produced alcoholic beverages, and handicrafts. Seasonal fruit desserts and dishes featuring Yamagata Beef make the complex a destination for food as well as shopping.

The surrounding riverside area also includes parks and sports facilities, making Cherry Land a convenient place for families, travelers taking a break, and visitors attending seasonal events.

Cherry Museum Hall

Cherry Museum Hall is a distinctive pink modern building inspired by the shape of a space shuttle. Inside, exhibits introduce the history of cherry cultivation in Sagae and explain traditional and modern cultivation methods.

The building houses what is described as Japan’s first museum dedicated to cherries, allowing visitors to learn more about the close relationship between Sagae and cherry growing.

The facility is also known for its selection of unique ice creams and gelato made with local ingredients. Throughout the year, exhibitions and hands-on events featuring photography, painting, calligraphy, pressed flowers, and other forms of art are also held, providing a place to experience local culture.

Turkey Pavilion

The Turkey Pavilion introduces the culture of the Republic of Turkey, one of the countries associated with the origins of cultivated cherries. It was built to commemorate Sagae’s sister-city relationship with Giresun, a city on Turkey’s Black Sea coast.

The building was designed with architecture inspired by the Ottoman Empire, giving it an exotic appearance that contrasts beautifully with the surrounding Japanese landscape.

Inside are displays of Turkish ceramics, glassware, copper crafts, textiles, and photographs. On the first floor, the Giresun Café offers Turkish coffee, allowing visitors to experience a small taste of Turkish culture while visiting Cherry Land.

With a spacious restaurant and banquet hall accommodating up to 200 people, the facility can also accommodate large groups and organized tours.

Rinsentei Traditional Tea Room

Rinsentei is a traditional Japanese wooden tea room designed according to the aesthetics of Japanese tea culture. Natural materials such as Japanese cypress from Miyazaki Prefecture and Kitayama cedar from Kyoto were used in its construction.

The tea room contains both a small koma tea room, measuring four and a half tatami mats, and a larger hiroma room measuring eight tatami mats. These spaces are used for tea ceremonies, workshops, and cultural activities.

Groups of around 20 people can enjoy tea here, and various hands-on cultural classes are also offered.

Amid the colorful attractions of Cherry Land, Rinsentei provides a peaceful setting where visitors can experience a more traditional side of Japanese culture.

The park is not limited to cherries. Visitors can also see plum, apple, grape, quince, peach, European pear, Japanese pear, blueberry, and other fruit trees.

Walking paths wind through the grounds, making it possible to enjoy a leisurely stroll while observing the flowers and fruits that change with the seasons. The park is a particularly fitting place to experience the connection between Cherry Land and Sagae’s fruit-growing culture.
