Ryukyu Awamori Kura Kusu is a premium Okinawan spirit that combines the traditional craftsmanship of awamori with the richness of long-term oak-barrel aging.
One of the defining characteristics of awamori is its traditional production method. Black koji mold is used to make the rice mash, which is then distilled only once. This distinctive process gives awamori its characteristic depth and aroma.
Kura Kusu is produced using this traditional method and is distilled in a copper still, which is said to encourage the development of a richer, more refined spirit during aging. It is then carefully matured in oak barrels, allowing time to soften and deepen its character.
The spirit is made by Helios Distillery, a company that began producing rum in 1961 and has developed extensive expertise in oak-barrel aging and blending. Its experience with barrel craftsmanship is brought together with Okinawa’s traditional awamori-making techniques in this distinctive expression.
Awamori aged for at least three years is traditionally known as kusu, or aged awamori. With extended maturation, the spirit develops a more elegant aroma and a deeper, smoother character.
Kura Kusu has a beautiful amber color created by its time in oak barrels, accompanied by a fragrant aroma and a mellow yet full-bodied flavor. Its combination of softness and depth makes it a particularly appealing choice for travelers who want to discover the more refined side of Okinawan spirits.
Kura Kusu can be enjoyed on the rocks, diluted with water, or mixed with hot water. Each style brings out different aspects of its aroma and flavor, making it an excellent spirit to savor slowly while experiencing Okinawa’s distinctive drinking culture.
