Nanko Park is said to be the oldest park in Japan, built in 1801 by Sadanobu Matsudaira, a lord of the Shirakawa Domain known as a tea master and gardener, based on the principle of “Shomin Kyoyuraku” (mutual enjoyment by citizens and citizens).
Yoshino cherry trees, pine trees, and maple trees from Arashiyama were transplanted to the lakeside, and visitors can enjoy beautiful seasonal scenery, including cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and snow in winter, with the majestic Nasu Mountain Range and Sekiyama in the background.
Suirakuen Garden
This is a Japanese-style garden with a pond and a circular path around it, which is a continuation of Sadanobu’s garden philosophy. In the shoin-style “Shorakutei”, visitors can enjoy presented tea (powdered green tea and fresh sweets) while admiring the garden.
