Mitake Ropeway

A Scenic Journey Above the Clouds

Mitake Ropeway is one of the best ways to experience the spectacular natural beauty of Mount Ontake, carrying visitors from the mountain foothills to a highland world at an elevation of 2,150 meters. Located in Kiso Town, Nagano Prefecture, the ropeway connects Kanose Station at 1,570 meters with Iimori Kogen Station at the seventh station of Mount Ontake.

The route stretches for approximately 2,330 meters, and the journey takes about 15 minutes each way. Although it is called a ropeway, the system actually uses six-passenger capsule-style gondolas, with around 80 cabins continuously circulating along the route. This makes it possible to enjoy the aerial journey with relatively little waiting.

A Relaxing 15-Minute Journey Through the Mountains

The gondola climbs approximately 580 meters in elevation in just 15 minutes. As you rise above the forests, the mountains of Kiso gradually unfold beneath you, offering a peaceful perspective that is difficult to experience from the ground.

The scenery and temperature change noticeably as the gondola climbs higher. Even in summer, the air around the upper station is pleasantly cool and refreshing, providing a welcome escape from the heat of the valleys below.

On clear days, spectacular views extend toward famous peaks of the Japanese Alps, including Mount Kiso-Komagatake and Mount Norikura. With the mountains and forests stretching into the distance, the journey can feel almost like traveling above the clouds.

Iimori Kogen Station: A Highland Panorama at 2,150 Meters

Arriving at Iimori Kogen Station, visitors enter a world of high mountain scenery at an elevation of 2,150 meters. From here, the Central Alps, Northern Alps, Mount Norikura, and the surrounding mountains create an impressive panoramic landscape.

The appearance of the mountains changes constantly with the season, weather, and time of day. Every visit can therefore offer a different view, from crisp blue skies and distant peaks to clouds drifting through the valleys below.

Mirror Deck: Where the Mountains Meet Their Reflection

One of the highlights at Iimori Kogen Station is the Mirror Deck on the rooftop. Heat-reflective glass panels cover the walls, creating striking reflections of Mount Ontake and the surrounding Alpine peaks on clear days.

The reflections blend with the actual landscape, creating an almost dreamlike scene in which the sky, mountains, and architecture appear to merge. The deck is also an excellent place for photography, offering memorable images that capture the mountain scenery from an unusual perspective.

Alps Deck: A Spectacular View from Above the Clouds

Another popular viewpoint is the Alps Deck. From an elevation of 2,150 meters, visitors can look out across the vast mountain landscape and, when conditions are right, see a sea of clouds spread far below.

Standing above the clouds can create the extraordinary sensation of walking through the sky. At sunrise and sunset, the surrounding mountains may be bathed in soft golden and reddish light, creating especially memorable scenery.

Alpine Botanical Garden: Discover the Flowers of the High Mountains

A high-altitude botanical garden is located around Iimori Kogen Station, where visitors can see a variety of alpine plants. The flowering season is relatively short because of the harsh mountain climate, making the brief summer display particularly precious.

Delicate alpine flowers swaying in the mountain breeze offer an easy way to experience the natural environment of Mount Ontake without undertaking a demanding mountain hike. The changing colors and flowers also provide another reason to visit at different times of the year.

Oyama no Ochaya: A Café Above 2,000 Meters

At the upper station, Oyama no Ochaya offers a relaxing place to enjoy light meals, sweets, and hot drinks while looking out over the surrounding mountains.

Enjoying coffee or lunch in the cool mountain air more than 2,000 meters above sea level feels like having a meal in a café above the clouds. It is an ideal place to slow down, take in the scenery, and escape the bustle of everyday life.

Oyama no Buranko: Swing Toward the Sky

For a more playful experience, visitors can try the popular Oyama no Buranko, or mountain swing. Children and adults alike can enjoy swinging out toward the magnificent mountain scenery in the clear air at 2,150 meters.

With Mount Ontake and the Alps visible beyond the swing, the experience can feel as though you are swinging directly into the sky. It is also a favorite spot for photographs, combining a fun activity with an unforgettable mountain backdrop.

Beautiful Scenery in Every Season

Spring brings a beautiful contrast between lingering snow on Mount Ontake and the fresh green of the forests. As summer arrives, the cool highland climate makes the area an attractive escape from the heat of the lowlands.

In autumn, the surrounding forests turn brilliant shades of red and gold. Looking down at the colorful mountains from inside the gondola creates a particularly beautiful experience. In winter, snow transforms Mount Ontake into a majestic landscape of white, creating a quiet and almost sacred atmosphere.

Because the scenery changes dramatically with the seasons, Mitake Ropeway offers a different experience each time you visit.

Access to Mitake Ropeway

Mitake Ropeway can be reached by both car and public transportation. By car, it is approximately 65 kilometers from the Ina Interchange, 70 kilometers from the Shiojiri Interchange, and 80 kilometers from the Nakatsugawa Interchange on the Chuo Expressway.

The drive itself is part of the experience, with the historic Kiso Valley, mountain scenery, and traditional post towns appearing along the way.

By public transportation, take the Ontake Ropeway Line of the Kiso Town community bus, operated by Ontake Kotsu, from JR Kiso-Fukushima Station. The journey takes approximately 60 minutes.

A Mountain Escape Above the Clouds

Mitake Ropeway connects the forests of Kiso with the high mountain world of Mount Ontake, offering spectacular scenery without requiring visitors to climb the mountain themselves. From the peaceful gondola ride to the panoramic viewpoints, alpine flowers, mountain café, and scenic swing, there are many ways to enjoy the highlands.

Leaving the ordinary world behind and ascending toward the clouds, visitors can experience the refreshing air and immense scale of the mountains. For travelers exploring the Kiso region, Mitake Ropeway offers a memorable opportunity to experience the natural beauty of Nagano from a truly elevated perspective.
