Junmai Daiginjo “Matsushima no Kaze”

A Refined Local Sake from Matsushima

Junmai Daiginjo “Matsushima no Kaze” is a refined local Japanese sake associated with the scenic coastal town of Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture. Its name, which can be translated as “The Breeze of Matsushima,” reflects its refreshing character and clean finish.

This sake offers a balanced flavor that is neither overpowering nor tiring to drink. Its delicate aftertaste and gentle richness pair naturally with food, making it particularly appealing to those who enjoy Japanese sake alongside a meal.

A Refreshing Flavor Inspired by the Breeze of Matsushima

As its name suggests, Matsushima no Kaze has a refreshing quality reminiscent of the sea breeze flowing through Matsushima. At the same time, its mellow flavor harmonizes beautifully with a wide range of dishes.

One especially recommended pairing is white-fleshed fish. The clean finish of the sake complements the delicate flavors of seafood without overpowering them, making it a natural choice for meals featuring the fresh ingredients of Miyagi’s coast.

Made with Local “Gin no Sei” Sake Rice

One of the distinctive features of Matsushima no Kaze is its use of “Gin no Sei”, a variety of sake rice grown in Matsushima by a local agricultural producers’ association using organic farming methods.

Both the raw material and the sake-making process are closely connected to Matsushima, giving the sake a strong sense of place. For travelers interested in Japanese regional cuisine, it offers an opportunity to taste a product that reflects the agricultural and culinary character of the area.

An Elegant Sake for Dining and Gifting

The refined character of Matsushima no Kaze makes it suitable for enjoying with food as well as for special occasions. Its sophisticated package, featuring distinctive flowing calligraphic lettering, also gives it an elegant appearance that makes it an attractive gift or souvenir from Matsushima.

For visitors exploring Matsushima, famous for its beautiful islands and coastal scenery, a bottle of this locally connected sake can be a memorable way to take a taste of the region home.

Abekan: A Sake Brewery with More Than 300 Years of History

Abekan Sake Brewery, the producer associated with Matsushima no Kaze, is located in Nishimachi, Shiogama, Miyagi Prefecture. The brewery was founded in 1716, giving it a long history spanning more than three centuries.

Its best-known sake brand is “Abekan.” The brewery has a particularly close historical connection with Shiogama Shrine. During the Edo period, it was commissioned by the Date domain to produce sake used as offering sake for the shrine, marking the beginning of its long tradition of brewing.

From a Historic Merchant Business to a Sake Brewery

The brewery also has a history of operating as a merchant business. In 2016, Abekan reached its 300th anniversary, marking an important milestone in its long history of sake production.

Over the centuries, the brewery has adapted its sake-making to changing tastes while maintaining its connection with the local community and regional ingredients.

Sake Designed to Enhance the Meal

Abekan’s philosophy is not simply to make sake that goes well with food, but to create sake that enhances the food itself. Its sake is therefore characterized by a pleasant rice-derived umami combined with a clean and refreshing finish.

This approach gives Abekan sake a subtle presence at the dining table. Rather than dominating the flavors of a meal, it is designed to bring out the character of the dishes served alongside it.

Sake Made with Miyagi Rice

Since 2012, the brewery has consolidated its products under the “Abekan” brand. Around 90 percent of the rice used is grown within Miyagi Prefecture, with Yamada Nishiki from outside the prefecture used for daiginjo production.

The brewery works with several varieties of locally grown rice, including Kura no Hana, Hitomebore, Sasanishiki, Manamusume, Kamenoo, and Hiyori. Each variety contributes its own characteristics, allowing the brewery to create sake with a diverse range of flavors.

The Rare “Kamenoo” Rice

Among the rice varieties used by Abekan, Kamenoo is particularly notable. Often described as a rare or “phantom” sake-rice variety, it is prized for the distinctive sake it can produce.

Sake made with Kamenoo can have a softly expanding aroma and a sharp, well-defined flavor. The character of the rice allows each sake to express its own individuality.

“The Best Supporting Actor” at the Dining Table

Abekan sake is often described as modest in its presence but outstanding in its ability to support a meal. It has been affectionately characterized as a “best supporting actor” because it complements food while allowing the dishes themselves to remain at the center of the dining experience.

Its honjozo and junmai sake are also trusted by restaurants and are enjoyed as everyday drinking sake. This balance between quality, subtlety, and food compatibility is an important part of Abekan’s brewing philosophy.

Taste the Character of Miyagi Through Local Sake

Junmai Daiginjo Matsushima no Kaze brings together the scenery, agriculture, and culinary traditions of Miyagi. Made with locally grown Gin no Sei sake rice and characterized by a refreshing finish and mellow flavor, it provides an elegant introduction to the region’s sake culture.

Combined with the long history of Abekan Sake Brewery and its philosophy of creating sake that enhances food, Matsushima no Kaze is more than a drink—it is a product that reflects the relationship between local ingredients, traditional craftsmanship, and Miyagi’s rich food culture.
