Katsuragi Sanroku Park

A Spacious Green Retreat Where Nature and History Thrive

Katsuragi Sanroku Park is a nature-rich park at the foot of majestic Mount Katsuragi in the western part of Katsuragi City, Nara Prefecture. Covering approximately 12.1 hectares, it is a popular local destination offering seasonal flowers, scenic views, and plenty of space to relax. Whether you want to take a leisurely stroll, enjoy outdoor activities with your family, or simply escape into nature, the park provides a refreshing setting for visitors of all ages.

Seasonal Flowers and Beautiful Natural Scenery

One of the park’s greatest attractions is its changing landscape throughout the year. In spring, approximately 400–500 cherry trees, mainly Somei Yoshino varieties, bloom across the grounds, creating a soft blanket of blossoms. From late March to early April, around 500 forsythia plants add vivid splashes of yellow to the scenery.

From mid-April through late May, approximately 1,000 Edo azalea plants reach their peak bloom, bringing vibrant color to the foothills of Mount Katsuragi. Bush clover and rhododendrons can also be enjoyed from summer into autumn, making the park a pleasant destination for appreciating the changing seasons.

Facilities and Activities for the Whole Family

Katsuragi Sanroku Park offers a variety of facilities, including open lawns, an outdoor stage, a gateball court, a suspension bridge, traditional-style gazebos, and walking trails. These spaces are ideal for picnics, gentle exercise, and relaxing outdoors.

The children’s play area features combination play equipment, slides, a roller slide, and a Tarzan rope, providing plenty of opportunities for active play. While children enjoy the playground, adults can unwind on the lawns or explore the walking paths and surrounding greenery. The park’s wide range of attractions makes it suitable for visitors of different ages and interests.

A Peaceful Park in a Region Rich in History

The park lies in the Oshiumi Valley and Namimaru Valley areas, centered on the Teraguchi district and close to the Yamaguchi and Hiraoka districts. This area forms part of the Teraguchi-Oshiumi Kofun Group, a collection of ancient burial mounds that reflects the region’s long history of honoring the spirits of ancestors.

By preserving the area’s natural setting while making it accessible for recreation, the park offers more than a place to relax. Visitors can also appreciate the historical landscape and reflect on the lives and traditions of the people who once inhabited this region.

Panoramic Views of the Yamato Plain

From the park’s elevated areas, visitors can enjoy expansive views across the Yamato Plain. On clear days, the landscape stretches far into the distance, offering a wonderful sense of openness and the scale of the surrounding countryside. The views provide a beautiful backdrop for a walk or a quiet break in nature.

Access and Visitor Information

Katsuragi Sanroku Park is approximately 3 km west of Oshiumi Station on the Kintetsu Gose Line, a walk of about 45 minutes. From Kintetsu Shinjo Station, visitors can take the Katsuragi City Community Bus on the Fuefuki–Umemuro route, which takes approximately 25 minutes to reach the area.

By car, the park is about 2.2 km south of Katsuragi Interchange on the Minami-Hanna Road. Free parking is available, making the park convenient for visitors traveling by car.

Combine Your Visit with Mount Katsuragi

Rising behind the park, Mount Yamato-Katsuragi reaches an elevation of 959.2 meters. It is known as the highest mountain in Osaka Prefecture and is also included among Japan’s 300 Famous Mountains. The nearby Katsuragi Plateau is particularly popular in spring, when its natural azalea garden comes into bloom, usually from early to mid-May.

Hiking trails and a ropeway provide ways to enjoy the mountain’s natural beauty. Combining a visit to Katsuragi Sanroku Park with an excursion to Mount Katsuragi makes it possible to experience the area’s flowers, panoramic scenery, history, and outdoor recreation in one trip.

With its seasonal blossoms, family-friendly facilities, historic surroundings, and sweeping views of the Yamato Plain, Katsuragi Sanroku Park is an inviting destination for anyone seeking a relaxing day in the countryside of Nara Prefecture.
