Hyogo Prefectural Akashi Park

A Scenic Park Spreading Across the Ruins of Akashi Castle

Hyogo Prefectural Akashi Park is a spacious urban park in Akashi City, Hyogo Prefecture, developed around the historic site of Akashi Castle. Combining historical landmarks with abundant greenery, the park offers a variety of cultural and sporting facilities, as well as beautiful seasonal scenery. It is a popular destination for history enthusiasts, nature lovers, families, and sports fans.

Overview of Akashi Park

Much of Akashi Park occupies the former grounds of Akashi Castle, creating a landscape where history and nature exist side by side. The park contains the Historic Site of Akashi Castle, cultural facilities such as the Hyogo Prefectural Library, sports facilities including a baseball stadium and athletics track, spacious lawns, and a traditional Japanese garden.

Musashi Garden

Located south of the castle’s Second Bailey, Musashi Garden is a Japanese garden traditionally associated with the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, who is said to have designed it. The garden opened to the public in 2003 and features a tranquil pond and lush greenery. Its peaceful atmosphere makes it an ideal place to relax and appreciate traditional Japanese garden design throughout the seasons.

The History of Akashi Park

The park first opened in 1883 as a privately operated park. In 1898, the land was incorporated into the Imperial Estate, and the park closed. It reopened in 1918 as a prefecturally operated park and has since undergone various expansions and improvements.

After suffering damage during World War II air raids, the park underwent postwar restoration. It also recovered from damage caused by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995, with restoration work on the castle ruins completed in 2000. In 2004, the Akashi Castle site was designated a National Historic Site.

The first floor of Tatsumi Yagura, the eastern surviving turret, and the first floor of Hitsujisaru Yagura, the western surviving turret, are opened to the public on weekends, offering visitors a closer look at the castle’s historic architecture.

Akashi Castle Ruins

Akashi Castle was a hilltop castle that originally had turrets at its four corners. Two of these structures, Hitsujisaru Yagura on the west side and Tatsumi Yagura on the east side, survive today. Both were designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan in 1957.

Other historic remains include the castle’s main foundation platform, the Second Bailey, the East Bailey, and the former inner moat. Together, these features provide a glimpse into the defensive layout and architectural heritage of a traditional Japanese castle.

Sports Facilities

Akashi Park offers a wide range of sporting facilities, including a baseball stadium, an athletics stadium, tennis courts, an archery range, and a lawn bowls court. These facilities attract visitors of different ages and skill levels throughout the year.

Baseball Stadium

The First Baseball Stadium at Hyogo Prefectural Akashi Park has a center-field distance of 122 meters and a distance of 100 meters along each foul line. Its spacious field accommodates a variety of baseball tournaments and sporting events.

Athletics Stadium

The athletics stadium has an eight-lane, 400-meter track and is certified as a Class 3 venue by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations. It provides a venue for track and field competitions as well as everyday athletic training.

Cultural Facilities

The Hyogo Prefectural Library is one of the park’s principal cultural facilities. The park also formerly housed the Akashi Furusato Library, which opened in 2017 and specialized in collecting and exhibiting materials related to local history and culture. It closed on March 31, 2020.

Another cultural highlight is Musashi Garden, a traditional strolling garden centered on a pond. Inspired by the garden attributed to Miyamoto Musashi, it offers visitors an opportunity to experience a peaceful Japanese landscape within the historic castle grounds.

Nature and Wildlife

Gonoike Pond and Cherry Blossoms

At the center of Akashi Park lies Gonoike Pond, a large body of water surrounded by approximately 2,000 Somei Yoshino cherry trees. In spring, the trees burst into bloom, drawing visitors for hanami, the Japanese tradition of enjoying cherry blossoms.

Rowboats and pedal boats are available for rent on the pond, making it a popular spot for couples and families to enjoy the water and surrounding scenery.

Birdwatching Around the Pond and Moat

The park’s moat and Gonoike Pond provide habitats for a variety of birds, including mute swans, ducks, and grey herons. In winter, flocks of black-headed gulls also visit the area. These birds make the park an enjoyable destination for wildlife observation and birdwatching, even beyond the cherry blossom season.

Getting to Akashi Park

Akashi Park is conveniently located about a five-minute walk from JR Akashi Station and Sanyo Akashi Station. It is also accessible by car from interchanges along the Daini-Shinmei Road. Paid parking is available within the park for visitors arriving by car.

Historical Discoveries Within the Park

Hitomaru-zuka and Asagiri Dormitory Tumulus

Within the park is a site known as Hitomaru-zuka, which was once believed to be an ancient burial mound. However, an archaeological excavation conducted in 1978 concluded that it was not a kofun, or ancient Japanese tumulus.

South of the park, the circular Asagiri Dormitory Tumulus remains as another archaeological feature. Pottery fragments have been recovered from its summit, providing clues to the area’s ancient past. These sites add another layer of historical interest to a park already known for its castle ruins and traditional garden.

A Park Where History and Nature Meet

Hyogo Prefectural Akashi Park offers much more than a green space in the city. Visitors can explore the surviving turrets of Akashi Castle, relax in Musashi Garden, enjoy cherry blossoms around Gonoike Pond, observe seasonal birdlife, or take part in sports and outdoor recreation. Its combination of cultural heritage and natural beauty makes it a rewarding destination throughout the year.
