Heisogen Park

A Scenic Hilltop Park Overlooking Shirahama

Heisogen Park is a spacious natural park located on elevated ground in Shirahama Town, Wakayama Prefecture. Thanks to its hilltop location, the park offers an impressive panorama of the surrounding landscape. Visitors can look toward the Kii Channel to the west, Yoshino-Kumano National Park to the south, and the mountain ranges known as the 3,600 Peaks of Kumano to the east.

The park is also ideally situated for views of Shirahama’s hot spring district, Shirarahama Beach, Engetsu Island, and Tanabe Bay. In addition to its spectacular scenery, Heisogen Park is known for its seasonal flowers, including cherry blossoms, roses, hydrangeas, plum blossoms, and daffodils.

With walking paths, a field athletic course, and a dog run, the park offers something for a wide range of visitors. It is a relaxing destination where travelers can enjoy flowers, fresh air, panoramic views, and outdoor activities in one place.

Panoramic Views of Shirahama

Heisogen Park is built on a hill overlooking the town of Shirahama. From the observation areas, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the blue Pacific waters, the hot spring district, Shirarahama Beach, Engetsu Island, and Tanabe Bay.

On a clear day, the blue of the sea blends beautifully with the open sky, creating an especially refreshing landscape. The elevated position also makes the park an excellent place to enjoy the sunset, when the coastal scenery takes on warm colors.

A new observation deck was added in 2008. The wooden deck extends outward from the hillside, providing a more dramatic perspective over the landscape. It was constructed using Kishu timber, giving the structure a warm, natural appearance.

A slope has also been provided to improve accessibility, allowing wheelchair users to enjoy the panoramic views more comfortably.

Approximately 2,000 Cherry Trees in Spring

One of the park’s most famous attractions is its approximately 2,000 Yoshino cherry trees. When the trees bloom in spring, much of the park is covered in soft shades of pink, making Heisogen one of the area’s most popular cherry blossom viewing locations.

The annual Cherry Blossom Festival is generally held from late March to early April, attracting visitors from both within and outside Shirahama.

The combination of cherry blossoms, blue skies, and the distant sea creates an unforgettable spring landscape. Visitors can stroll beneath rows of cherry trees, relax on benches, admire the views, or take photographs with family and friends.

Rather than simply visiting for a quick photograph, the park is an excellent place to slow down and enjoy a leisurely spring walk surrounded by nature.

Seasonal Flowers Throughout the Year

Cherry blossoms are not the only flowers that make Heisogen Park attractive. The park’s gardens provide different seasonal highlights throughout the year.

In spring, plum blossoms, spiraea, and azaleas add color to the landscape. Early summer brings hydrangeas and roses, while plum blossoms and daffodils provide beautiful seasonal scenery during the colder months.

The combination of flowers, open skies, and views toward the ocean also makes Heisogen Park a popular destination for photography.

A Beautiful Rose Garden

At the rear of the park is a beautiful rose garden. From May through July, approximately 1,500 roses representing around 70 varieties bloom in succession.

The main flowering period is generally from mid-May to late May. Roses in shades of red, pink, yellow, and other colors create a colorful display and fill the garden with their fragrance.

The rose garden is particularly popular with photographers and visitors who enjoy strolling among the flowers.

A Family-Friendly Field Athletic Course

Heisogen Park also features the Heisogen Trim Course, an approximately 2-kilometer outdoor athletic course around the perimeter of the park.

The course includes 18 different pieces of outdoor equipment with playful names such as “Nerve-Racking Log Crossing” and “Surprise Balance Beam.” Simple equipment made from logs, ropes, and other natural materials gives the course a nostalgic atmosphere.

Children can enjoy moving from one obstacle to the next while adults can join in and rediscover the fun of playing outdoors.

Because the course combines walking with physical activity, it is also a good way to refresh yourself while enjoying the natural surroundings. Families can spend active time together and create memorable experiences away from the usual sightseeing attractions.

A Popular Dog Run for Pet Owners

Heisogen Park has a spacious approximately 800-square-meter dog run that can be used free of charge.

Surrounded by greenery, the open area gives dogs plenty of room to run and play while their owners enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Combining the dog run with a walk through the park is a pleasant way to spend time with a four-legged companion.

Attractions Around Heisogen Park

The area surrounding Heisogen Park contains many of Shirahama’s best-known attractions. Shirarahama Beach, Engetsu Island, and the Shirahama hot spring district are all conveniently located nearby, making the park an easy addition to a sightseeing itinerary.

Yama Shrine and the History of Shirahama Onsen

On the way to the park, visitors can stop at Yama Shrine, also known as Onsen Shrine. The shrine provides an opportunity to learn more about Shirahama’s long history as a hot spring destination.

The grounds include the Yuzaki Onsen Monument, which commemorates the area’s traditional hot spring culture. A visit here offers a glimpse into the history behind the hot spring resort that has attracted visitors to Shirahama for centuries.

A Unique View of the Airport

The area around Heisogen Park also offers unusual views of the large approach lighting structures leading toward the runway of Nanki-Shirahama Airport.

The distinctive structures create an unexpected contrast with the surrounding natural landscape and can make an interesting photographic subject.

A Peaceful Place to Enjoy Nature and Scenery

With its expansive grounds, seasonal flowers, and spectacular views, Heisogen Park is one of the best places in Shirahama to combine nature with panoramic scenery.

Spring is especially popular for the approximately 2,000 cherry trees, while the rose garden becomes a highlight from late spring into early summer. Autumn offers crisp air and clear views, and winter brings the delicate beauty of plum blossoms and daffodils.

The park can be enjoyed in many different ways: taking a leisurely walk, photographing flowers and scenery, having a relaxing break, enjoying the athletic course with children, or letting a dog run freely in the dog run.

Its elevated location also makes it an excellent place to appreciate Shirahama from a different perspective. After visiting the beaches and hot springs below, coming up to the hilltop provides a refreshing change of atmosphere.
