Hara Fudo Waterfall

One of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls

Hara Fudo Waterfall is a spectacular waterfall in Hara, Haga Town, Shiso City, Hyogo Prefecture. Selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls, it is celebrated for its impressive scale, beautiful natural surroundings, and historical significance. Set amid the forests of the Hyonosen-Usiroyama-Nagisan Quasi-National Park, it is a rewarding destination for nature lovers, photographers, and hikers.

A Magnificent Three-Tiered Waterfall

Hara Fudo Waterfall is one of the region’s best-known natural landmarks. Its scenic beauty was recognized nationally in 1969, when the waterfall was featured on a commemorative stamp issued as part of a series celebrating Japan’s quasi-national parks.

The waterfall lies along the Hachijo River, a tributary of the Hikinbara River, which flows into the Ibo River system. The river originates near Mount Takero, which rises to 1,129 meters. The waterfall plunges approximately 88 meters over three distinct tiers, creating a dramatic cascade framed by lush woodland.

The falls consist of two streams known as Otaki, or the male waterfall, and Medaki, or the female waterfall. Otaki descends in three stages, while Medaki flows into the plunge pool at the base of Otaki’s lowest tier from the left. Together, they form a distinctive natural spectacle.

Scenic Views from Oku Kaede Bridge

One of the best places to admire the waterfall is Oku Kaede Bridge, a suspension bridge that offers a broad view of the cascading water and surrounding forest. The bridge is also a popular spot for photography, allowing visitors to capture the waterfall against its natural backdrop.

Along the walking trail between the parking area and the waterfall stands a small shrine hall called Fudo-do. The building is associated with the name of the waterfall and adds a spiritual and historical dimension to the visit. The peaceful setting provides an opportunity to pause and appreciate the harmony between nature and traditional Japanese religious culture.

Forest Scenery and Autumn Foliage

The area around Hara Fudo Waterfall has been developed as Haga Fudo Falls Park, a natural retreat surrounded by rich woodland. The forest is also recognized as one of the 100 Best Forests in Hyogo Prefecture, under the name Hara Fudo Falls Forest Park.

The surrounding vegetation includes evergreen fir trees, deciduous beech trees, and Japanese maples. The combination of conifers and broadleaf trees creates attractive scenery throughout the year, but autumn is particularly beautiful, when the forest turns brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold. The waterfall and colorful foliage make this an appealing destination for seasonal photography and leisurely walks.

Camping and Outdoor Activities

The park and its surroundings are popular with visitors who enjoy camping, hiking, and exploring the natural landscape. The area previously included Fukasō, a lodging and hot spring facility, as well as a campground. Fukasō closed in May 2020, so visitors should check current information before planning a stay or expecting particular facilities to be available.

Even without the former accommodation facility, Hara Fudo Waterfall remains an attractive destination for a nature excursion. Its forest trails, impressive cascades, and seasonal scenery make it a worthwhile stop for travelers exploring the mountains of northern Hyogo Prefecture.
