Chiba Prefectural Futtsu Park

A Scenic Park of Pine Forests and the Sea

Chiba Prefectural Futtsu Park is a large urban park located on Cape Futtsu in Futtsu City, Chiba Prefecture. Situated within the Minami-Boso Quasi-National Park, the park is known for its beautiful coastal scenery, pine forests, historic sites, and recreational facilities.

The park has been selected as one of the 100 Best Urban Parks in Japan and the 100 Best White-Sand-and-Pine Landscapes in Japan. It has also been included in the 500 Selected Attractions of Boso, the 100 Scenic Views of Mt. Fuji in the Kanto Region, and the 100 Chiba Scenic Views. The Nakano-shima Park Observation Tower has also been selected as one of Japan’s “100 Heritage Sites” (Heritaging 100).

Cape Futtsu and Its Coastal Landscape

The Distinctive Shape of Cape Futtsu

Cape Futtsu is a long, narrow headland extending into Tokyo Bay and forms the central area of the park. At the tip of the cape stands the distinctive Meiji Centennial Memorial Observation Tower.

From the observation tower, visitors can enjoy broad views of Tokyo Bay, the Boso Hills, and the Miura Peninsula. On clear days, Mount Fuji can also be seen in the distance. The sunset views are particularly beautiful, making the cape a popular destination for photographers and sightseeing visitors.

Futtsu Su Seashore Plant Community

The coastal area of Cape Futtsu includes the Futtsu Su Seashore Plant Community, a natural area designated as a Natural Monument by Chiba Prefecture in 1954.

The designation protects the area’s distinctive coastal vegetation. Visitors can experience the natural environment of the Futtsu coastline while walking through an area where plants have adapted to the sandy seaside landscape.

Main Facilities in Futtsu Park

Nakano-shima Park Observation Tower

The Nakano-shima Park Observation Tower stands on elevated ground surrounded by the park’s large pond. From the tower, visitors can look across much of Futtsu Park and enjoy views surrounded by pine trees.

The tower has been selected as one of Japan’s 100 Heritage Sites (Heritaging 100), making it an interesting destination for visitors who appreciate both architecture and natural scenery.

Futtsu Park Jumbo Pool

Futtsu Park Jumbo Pool is a large seasonal swimming facility within the park. It includes a water slide, lazy river, and competition swimming pool, offering a variety of ways to enjoy the water.

During the summer vacation season, the pool becomes especially popular with families looking for a refreshing outdoor activity.

Campground

A spacious campground is located among the pine trees near the entrance to the park. The site can accommodate approximately 1,000 people and is suitable for camping and barbecues.

Visitors can also use the site for a barbecue without staying overnight, making it a convenient option for those who want to enjoy an outdoor experience during a day trip.

Other Recreational Facilities

The Meiji Centennial Memorial Observation Tower

The Meiji Centennial Memorial Observation Tower is one of the most recognizable landmarks on Cape Futtsu. Located at the very tip of the cape, it was completed on March 31, 1970.

The tower was built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the Meiji period. Its distinctive design is inspired by a five-needle pine tree, known in Japanese as goyōmatsu.

A Panoramic View of Tokyo Bay

The highest observation level is approximately 21.8 meters above the ground. From the top, visitors can enjoy a sweeping panorama of Tokyo Bay, the Miura Peninsula, and the Boso Hills.

In winter and on other days when the air is particularly clear, Mount Fuji can be seen across Tokyo Bay. The tower has therefore been selected as one of the 100 Scenic Views of Mt. Fuji in the Kanto Region and one of the 100 Chiba Scenic Views.

A Popular Sunset Photography Spot

The observation tower is especially attractive around sunset. The sky and sea can take on warm orange tones as the sun goes down, while views toward Tokyo, the Tokyo metropolitan skyline, and Kanagawa Prefecture stretch across the bay.

The combination of the sea, distant cityscape, and changing evening light makes the observation tower a popular photography spot and a memorable place to enjoy the scenery.

Views of Tokyo Bay’s Historic Fortifications

From the observation tower, visitors can also see the Daiichi Kaiho and Daini Kaiho, two artificial islands built as part of Tokyo Bay’s coastal defense system during the Meiji and Taisho periods.

These former sea fortifications played a role in the defense of the capital and remain important historic structures in Tokyo Bay. Seeing them from Futtsu provides an opportunity to appreciate both the natural and military history of the bay.

Outdoor Activities Around Cape Futtsu

The area around Cape Futtsu offers a variety of seaside activities, particularly from spring through summer. Popular activities include clam digging, traditional beach seine-net experiences, and swimming.

With its combination of beaches, open spaces, and recreational facilities, the area is suitable for families, groups, and travelers looking for an active day outdoors.

Enjoying Futtsu Beach

Nearby Futtsu Beach develops a broad tidal flat at low tide. Visitors can enjoy clam digging and collect shellfish such as clams and hard clams when conditions and seasonal regulations permit.

The beach is also popular for swimming and barbecues, making it a well-loved summer leisure destination for both local residents and visitors.
