Country Park Ōko

A Hands-On Nature Park Where Jōmon History Meets the Outdoors

Country Park Ōko is a nature and recreation park in Yamazoe Village, Yamabe District, Nara Prefecture. Developed to preserve and make use of the Ōko Archaeological Site, an important settlement dating to the Early Jōmon period, the park offers visitors an opportunity to explore Japan’s prehistoric past while enjoying the surrounding natural landscape. Located on a river terrace overlooking the Nabari River, the site preserves traces of human life dating back approximately 12,000 to 7,000 years. It is an appealing destination for families, history enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to experience the connection between ancient life and the natural environment.

The Ōko Archaeological Site: A Prefecturally Designated Historic Site

The Ōko Archaeological Site is designated as a historic site by Nara Prefecture. Excavations have uncovered remains of pit dwellings, stone hearth installations, and pits containing evidence of burning, providing valuable insight into how people lived during the Early Jōmon period. The circular dwellings discovered here measured approximately 3 to 3.8 meters in diameter and around 40 centimeters deep. Unlike many familiar examples of prehistoric dwellings, these structures apparently had no hearth inside. Instead, cooking facilities made with heated stones are thought to have been arranged around the outside of the dwellings. These distinctive features offer a fascinating glimpse into the daily routines and practical ingenuity of Japan’s early inhabitants.

Ōko-Style Pottery and Other Archaeological Finds

Numerous examples of Early Jōmon pottery have been excavated at the site, including pottery decorated with patterns made by pressing shaped implements into the clay. Particularly noteworthy vessels have wide, flaring rims and varied geometric designs, including checkerboard-like patterns. These are known as Ōko-style pottery and are highly regarded as representative examples of some of the earliest forms of impressed-pattern pottery. The excavations have also yielded a variety of stone tools, including arrowheads, stone drills, and pointed stone implements. These artifacts help researchers understand the tools and techniques used by prehistoric communities. Visitors interested in seeing the actual discoveries can find archaeological artifacts from the site on display at the Yamazoe Village Historical and Folklore Museum.

Reconstructed Pit Dwelling and Educational Exhibits

A reconstructed pit dwelling stands within the park, based on findings from archaeological excavations. Together with the explanatory panels in the park’s administration building, it helps visitors understand the construction of prehistoric homes and the living environment of the Jōmon period. Seeing a full-size reconstruction makes it easier to imagine ancient life than simply reading descriptions or looking at photographs. The exhibits provide an accessible introduction to archaeology for visitors of different ages, making the park a rewarding destination for families and school groups.

Enjoy Outdoor Activities Throughout the Seasons

Country Park Ōko is more than an archaeological attraction. Its natural setting also makes it a pleasant place for camping, picnicking, and seasonal sightseeing.

Spring: Cherry Blossoms and the Sakura Festival

Approximately 200 cherry trees grow throughout the park, creating a beautiful display when they bloom in spring. A cherry blossom festival is held in early April each year, offering visitors a chance to enjoy the seasonal scenery. Camping or strolling beneath the blossoms is a particularly appealing way to experience the park during this time of year.

Summer: Camping and Barbecues by the River

In summer, the nearby Nabari River adds to the appeal of the surrounding countryside. Visitors can enjoy camping and barbecues while taking in the fresh air and natural scenery.

Autumn: Colorful Foliage and Starry Skies

In autumn, the contrasting colors of evergreen conifers and deciduous trees create an attractive seasonal landscape. After dark, the lack of extensive artificial lighting allows the night sky to appear especially clear, making the park a wonderful place to enjoy stargazing.

Facilities for Families and Outdoor Enthusiasts

The park has facilities for a comfortable outdoor visit, including a campground, barbecue area, cooking shelter, restrooms, and an administration building. A roller slide provides additional entertainment for children. With opportunities for outdoor play, meals in nature, and overnight camping, the park offers activities for a wide range of ages. Visitors can combine a relaxing day outdoors with an educational experience exploring Japan’s prehistoric heritage.

A Filming Location for the Movie Manhunt

Country Park Ōko has also attracted attention as a filming location for the movie Manhunt. Its combination of lush natural scenery and archaeological significance gives the park a distinctive atmosphere, making it an interesting stop for both film enthusiasts and travelers exploring the countryside of Nara Prefecture.

Access to Country Park Ōko

By Car

The park is approximately 2 kilometers from Satsukibashi Interchange on the Meihan National Highway, making it convenient to reach by car. It is also located about 20 kilometers east of central Nara City, making it a possible destination for a day trip.

A Refreshing Escape into Japan’s Prehistoric Past

Country Park Ōko offers a distinctive combination of archaeology, outdoor recreation, and seasonal beauty. Visitors can learn about the lives of people who lived thousands of years ago, examine the story of ancient pottery and stone tools, and then enjoy cherry blossoms, riverside camping, or a sky full of stars.
