Roadside Station Crossway Nakamachi

A New Gateway to Nara with Disaster-Preparedness Facilities

Roadside Station Crossway Nakamachi is a modern roadside rest and tourism facility located in Nakamachi, Nara City, Nara Prefecture, along Prefectural Route 7, which connects Hirakata and Yamatokōriyama. It is conveniently situated just off the Nakamachi Interchange on the Daini Hanna Road, making it an ideal gateway to northwestern Nara Prefecture. The facility opened on November 30, 2024, and has attracted attention as Nara Prefecture’s first designated disaster-prevention roadside station. It serves as a center for tourism, community interaction, and emergency preparedness.

Nara Prefecture’s First Disaster-Prevention Roadside Station

Crossway Nakamachi is designed to serve not only as a place for sightseeing, shopping, and rest during ordinary times, but also as a regional disaster-response base in emergencies. Its facilities include emergency power generators, storage warehouses for emergency supplies, water storage tanks, and manhole-style emergency toilets. These provisions help support local residents and travelers in the event of a disaster.

The combination of visitor-friendly services and disaster-prevention infrastructure is one of the station’s defining features. It offers a convenient stop for travelers while also playing an important role in regional safety and resilience.

Warm Wooden Architecture and Spacious Open Areas

The facility features a welcoming architectural design that incorporates locally produced Nara cedar and cypress. High ceilings and spacious walkways create a comfortable environment where visitors can relax without feeling crowded. A grassy lawn and open-air terrace provide additional places to unwind, making the station enjoyable even for those who simply want to take a break and appreciate the outdoors.

Fresh Produce and Local Specialties at Shun no Eki

The Shun no Eki Crossway Nakamachi farm produce and local specialty market receives fresh seasonal vegetables and fruit every day from approximately 3,500 producers, primarily from Nara Prefecture. Visitors can discover regional Yamato vegetables, including Yamato maru eggplant and Yamato chrysanthemum greens, alongside a wide selection of everyday foods such as bread, eggs, tofu, and sweets.

The store celebrates the character of Nara, offering local specialties and souvenirs such as narazuke pickles preserved in sake lees, locally produced sake, and traditional Japanese confectionery. Handwritten product descriptions prepared by staff introduce the producers and explain the appeal of individual items, making browsing the market an enjoyable part of the visit.

Nakamachi Kitchen: Italian and Japanese Cuisine

Nakamachi Kitchen serves Italian and Japanese dishes prepared with carefully selected ingredients, including vegetables grown in Nara Prefecture and regional specialties such as Yamato beef, Yamato pork, and Yamato chicken. The restaurant offers breakfast in the morning, full meals during lunch and dinner, as well as café items and takeout options.

Inside, long cypress tables create a warm atmosphere that is both relaxed and lively. On pleasant days, the open terrace is an inviting place to enjoy a meal in the fresh air. Homemade gelato made with seasonal fruit is another popular treat.

Senjuan Yoshimune Nakamachi: A Japanese Dessert Café

Senjuan Yoshimune Nakamachi is a dessert café created by Senjuan Yoshimune, a long-established confectionery maker in Nara. The relaxing interior is scented with tea from a traditional tea incense burner, creating a soothing setting in which to enjoy Japanese sweets and shaved ice made with Japanese ingredients and fruit from Nara Prefecture.

One of the café’s signature offerings is fresh warabi mochi, a traditional Japanese confection made using bracken starch. Its soft, gently quivering texture and delicate sweetness make it a favorite both for eating at the café and taking home as a souvenir. Seasonal shaved ice, including varieties made with the locally prized Kotoka strawberries, offers another reason to visit throughout the year.

A Variety of Activities and Visitor Facilities

Cycling Station

The cycling station provides tools for bicycle maintenance, along with changing rooms and paid shower facilities. It is a convenient place to stop during a cycling trip. Rental bicycles are also available, allowing visitors to explore nearby attractions at a leisurely pace.

Tomiō Maruyama Kofun and Nearby Attractions

Immediately beside the roadside station lies Tomiō Maruyama Kofun, the largest circular burial mound in Japan. The site attracted widespread attention following the discovery of remarkable artifacts, including a huge serpentine sword and a shield-shaped bronze mirror, both of exceptional archaeological importance.

The station is also a convenient base for visiting other cultural and historical attractions in the Nara area, including Ryōsenji Temple, the Yamato Bunkakan Museum of Oriental Art, the Shōhaku Art Museum, and Yatadera Temple. Its convenient location makes it useful for planning day trips around the region.
