21st Century Forest and Kii Peninsula Forest Botanical Park

A Peaceful Nature Park Filled with Forests, Flowers, and Outdoor Adventures

The 21st Century Forest and Kii Peninsula Forest Botanical Park is a large nature park in Totsukawa Village, Nara Prefecture, where visitors can experience the region’s rich natural environment and forest culture. Covering approximately 200 hectares amid the mountains of the Kii Peninsula, the park features plants collected from around the world alongside trees native to the peninsula. Its scenery changes beautifully with the seasons, making it an appealing destination for nature walks, environmental learning, and family outings.

The World Forest: A Spectacular Collection of Rhododendrons

One of the park’s main attractions is the World Forest, home to approximately 10,000 rhododendrons representing around 120 varieties. Rhododendrons are also the official flower of Totsukawa Village. In spring, the forest comes alive with blossoms in vivid shades of pink, white, lavender, and reddish purple.

Often called the “queen of the forest,” the rhododendron is admired for its elegant form and striking flowers. The best time to see the blooms is generally from early April through late May, when the park attracts visitors eager to enjoy this colorful seasonal display.

Nature to Enjoy Throughout the Seasons

Spring brings rhododendrons, wild cherry blossoms, and the fresh growth of edible mountain plants. By early summer, bright green leaves fill the forest, accompanied by the songs of Japanese bush warblers and the tapping sounds of woodpeckers. The park offers a refreshing setting for forest bathing and observing the rhythms of nature.

In autumn, the leaves of plants such as enkianthus shrubs turn brilliant shades of red and orange. The cooler weather is ideal for hiking and collecting fallen acorns and pinecones. Nature observation and birdwatching can be enjoyed throughout the year, making the park a rewarding destination for visitors who appreciate the outdoors.

Discover Totsukawa’s Forest Heritage at the Forest Museum

The park’s Forest Museum introduces the close relationship between Totsukawa Village and its surrounding forests through exhibits and audiovisual presentations. Visitors can watch nature films shown on a three-sided multiscreen display and use a computer-based station to look up information about plants.

Designed for visitors of different ages, the museum provides an engaging way for children and adults to learn about the local environment. The grounds also include a learning room with seating for approximately 90 people and a spacious field where visitors can enjoy sports and other outdoor activities.

Outdoor Adventures at the Village in the Sky

The park is also home to the outdoor attraction known as Kuuchu no Mura, or “Village in the Sky,” where visitors can experience elevated walkways among the trees. Overnight stays are available, allowing guests to experience the forest after dark and enjoy a different perspective on the natural surroundings.

With opportunities for outdoor play and overnight adventures, the facility is popular with families looking to spend quality time together in nature. It offers a chance for both children and adults to explore the forest in an active and memorable way.

A Monument Remembering the Great Totsukawa Flood of 1889

The park also preserves the memory of the devastating Great Totsukawa Flood of 1889. In 1990, marking the centenary of the establishment of Totsukawa Village in its modern form, a commemorative monument titled “The Sun Rising over Totsukawa” was erected. The work was created by artist Koji Kinutani.

The monument honors those who lost their lives in the disaster and recalls the hardships endured by local residents as they rebuilt their communities. It provides a quiet place for reflection on the area’s history, resilience, and recovery.
